My Overall Cholesterol Is 227. But My Hdl Is 110 And Ldl Is 98.

I know that overall cholesterol should not be over 200. My overall cholesterol is 227. But my HDL is 110 and LDL is 98. Triglyceride are 97. what does that mean for me.

Answer

Hi Char,

Here are the recommendations of the American Heart Association:

Total cholesterol less than 200
HDL cholesterol at least > 40, ideally > 60
LDL cholesterol at least less than 130, ideally less than 100
Triglycerides less than 150

Your HDL cholesterol is so high it will be difficult for your total cholesterol to be less than 200. Your LDL & triglyercides are both within normal. Such a high HDL cholesterol may or may not be a worry. I recommend discussing a comprehensive lipid panel with your physician to better evaluated your cholesterol particle sizes.
