Pain & Itchy Breast Nipple

hi, I am a 49 year old white female, who had a hysterectomy 13 years ago, take no hormones. A year ago I started having pain and itching in my left breast nipple comes and goes. ( no discharge, no color change, no rash and no injury) I had a mammogram done, dense breast, small cyst, nothing to be concerned about come back in a year. The pain and itchness has increased and I started having itching in my left armpit. I went back to the Dr. 2 weeks ago, she order a mammogram, samething as last mammogram, I ask what could cause pain, The tech told me that my breast makes hormones. I ask how hormones are being made since I had a hysterectomy, she said that ladies with dense breast have pain and there is no answer sometime. I am seeing a new Dr. in a week, but can you help me try and figure out what is going on. The waiting is starting to bother me and I am scared. Thank you

Hi - Please read our post on fibrocystic change; it sounds like that's what the issue could be. It's quite common in women with dense breasts, and can be quite painful. As for the itching, please read our post on nipple issues. Again, this might give you an idea of what's going on. Hopefully this information will help keep you calm as you wait for your next appointment. Also, pain and itching are usually not a symptom of breast cancer; except for inflammatory breast cancer, which progresses into an evident cancer way more quickly than over the course of a year... Good luck - hope things turn out well for you. PJH
