Physical Activity Boosts Mood, Motivation

New research studied the effects of light exercise during the work or school day by comparing traditional desks to FitDesks—ergonomically correct, stationary bikes and laptop workstations. The study showed that light physical activity while working can provide a number of benefits, without having a negative effect on work or study productivity.

A sedentary lifestyle—including sitting several hours a day to work or study—is associated with several health risks over time, and researchers are trying to find ways to improve workers’ and students’ well-being without reducing in productivity. In this study, participants who used the FitDesks experienced improvements in mood, morale, and motivation, as well as a “positive affect,” which may boost creativity and increase problem-solving and decision-making skills.

More long-term studies are needed, but who knows? Physical activity workstations are becoming more popular—and soon we may even be able to hop on a stationary bike while waiting at the airport, online at the DMV, or at the doctor’s office!
