I am a 56 year old woman. The idea was to start on a low dose of the beta-blocker nadolol and then increase it but I had this reaction the very first time I took it. I was slightly cloudy headed for two days. I hope some other medication can be used in hopes of preventing migraines but I'm concerned that my reaction may rule out options. I am healthy in all other respects though I have been battling sinus/migraine headaches for two months now after 15 years of only sporadic migraines (hormone related) that respond well to imitrex.

Answer

Hi PHF,

Nadolol, a beta blocker used for Migraine prevention is just one option that Migraineurs have. But if you were not tolerating it at that dose, maybe a lower dose would be a better way to start, if your doctor feels it is appropriate. If not, please don't lose hope, because if one beta blocker doesn't work for you, there are many more to try. And they all work just a little differently, so another beta blocker may be a better drug for you.

In either case, there are now over 100 medications and supplements that can be used for Migraine and headache prevention. It's just so frustrating trying to find what works for us if feels like we've tried them all. But with so many different medications, it's literally impossible! See Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up! for more information.

So, might I suggest a printed out copy of the about article to take to your doctor, so you can discuss the different options. If he/she isn't listening or willing to work with you, it may be time for a new doctor. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? Good luck
