Can You Take Prilosec And Pepcid Together?

I currently take pepsid 20mg twice a day and have been cleared to take prilosec 20mg since I am no longer taking plavix. I am considering taking prilosec in the morning and if needed pepsid at night. Is this ok? My reflux / indigestion is terrible at night.

Answer

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor. Prevacid is a H2 blocker. Both work to reduce stomach acid production and both are bad for the bones.

In fact, Proton Pump Inhibitors are know to increase the risk for bone fractures.

When stomach medications are taken at high doses for long periods of time (over two years) the results can be weak fragile bones. Why? These popular stomach medications cause a reduced acid environment in the stomach which effects the aborption of critical nutrients like calcium according to a report by the US Dept of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research.

Look at other ways to help your tummy feel better: check the gallbladder, review the foods you eat, lose weight, and talk with your doctor about your concern for your bones.
