PTSD Causes Brain Disruptions in Kids

A new study shows that children may more vulnerable to the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder—PTSD—than adults. MRI brain scans of children with PTSD showed abnormal disruptions in neural networks.

The study, which was conducted in China, involved 47 children who had lived through a devastating earthquake that caused almost 70,000 deaths. Of the 47, all had experienced trauma and 24 were diagnosed with post-traumatic stress. Brain scans showed significant differences between children with PTSD and the other group.

Post-traumatic stress disorder can affect children who experience or witness natural disasters, violent crimes, or abuse. Researchers are hoping that this information will aid in the development of new and more effective treatments for children with PTSD.
