I Have Puckering In The Aerola Of My Left Breast Directly Above The Nipple. Could This Be Cancer?

I will be seeing my doctor for a check-up next week, so I will tell her about this. I am worried that I could have breast cancer. My left aerola puckers right above the nipple. I can't really feel any lumps below it. But I am scared. Could this be cancer?

Answer

Hi Jill: Kudos to you for being aware of breast changes. Puckering in the breast can be a sign of breast cancer, but it can also signal fibroadenoma (a benign breast condition), perhaps a cyst... many other things. So it's good you're seeing the doctor, and good for you to be concerned, but don't panic, OK?. I know you'll be scared till you see the doctor, but please know that statistically speaking, chances are very good that this is NOT cancer. Good luck - PJH
