Pulmicort Versus Symbicort

Symbicort is so expensive. How does symbicort compare to Pulmicort?

Dear Rosiegirl:

Pulmicort and Symbicort are two different medications. Pulmicort is an inhaled corticosteroid. It works on the airway inflammation component associated with asthma. Symbicort is a combination therapy and has both an inhaled corticosteroid & a long acting bronchodilator. It addresses both the inflammation and the bronchoconstriction (or spasm) in the airways.

Both have their place in asthma management. Your provider will need to look at your current asthma control and evaluate which is best. If you are concerned about the cost for the one you need, ask your doctor (or nurse) about the options for prescription assistance. All pharmaceutcal companies have assistance programs to help patients afford the medications that they need. Some are more generous than others, so don't assume that if you don't qualify for one, that you are out for all.

Good luck and Breathe Easy!
