I Have A Raised Spot On My Nipple That’s Extremely Painful. What Might Cause This?
Your nipple area is filled with lots of tiny oil glands that keep the nipple and areola soft and supple. Sometimes these glands become blocked, and a small infection develops - just like a pimple on your face. And, like a pimple, a major blockage can become quite painful. Once the blockage is relieved, the pain and enlargement disappear.
If you feel this might be a blocked oil gland, then try applying hot compresses to possibly ease the pain and promote healing. If this doesn’t help in a day or two, then it’s time to see the doctor. Also, if you have any other symptoms of a possible infection - an itchy breast, for instance, or redness/swelling in your breast - see the doctor ASAP. In the meantime, please read our guide to nipple issues for more helpful information.
