Recurrent Genital Herpes Outbreaks And Birth Control

Hi, I am a 24 yr old female who has had genital herpes for about 3 yrs now. The first 2 yrs I had herpes I would get an outbreak once every 3 months. The past 8 months I have been getting outbreaks very frequently, the past 3 months I have been getting an outbreak at least once a week! It seems as soon as one goes away I have another one within 5 days! I exercise, take multi-vitamins, and eat right. I'm wondering if this could be from my birth control. I starting taking birth control again about a yr ago, and just recently (about 3 months) my doctor put me on a higher estrogen pill. Could this be the reason i am having so many outbreaks all of a sudden?? If not, what could it be??

Answer

Though I have not heard of a connection the fact that you notice the timing is pretty coincidental, makes me wonder. I'd stop the birth control to test the theory but I'd also make sure you are not experiencing ongoing stress that is causing these breakouts.

I'd also consider taking acycolvir to see if it helps if the birth control is not the culprit. Please come back and let us know.
