My Right Eye Also Hurts During A Migraine. Is That Normal?

Most of my migraines are on the right side of my head and my right eye always hurts during the migraine. I have been to the eye doctor and she didn't find anything. Is this normal? I haven't seen it listed in any of the symptoms, and it wasn't a symptom of mine until the last 5 years. I have been getting migraines since I was 9, and I am now 44.

Answer

Kelly,

The trigeminal nerve becomes inflamed during a Migraine, and one branch of it runs just above the eyes. For this reason, it's not uncommon for the eyes to hurt during a Migraine. Take a look at Pathways of Migraine to see a diagram of this.

You can find this symptom along with other Migraine symptoms described in our article Anatomy of a Migraine.

If you haven't already, be sure to mention this to your physician.

Hope this helps,

Teri
