Safe Around Children/babies?

Safe Around Children/babies?

Does anyone have a problem with letting people know that a schizophrenic is safe to be around children?

Answer

Hello pinkfloyd,

Your question as written is unclear.

Why would you want to tell someone you had schizophrenia if it has no bearing on the situation? I have schizophrenia and I have a niece and nephew, under the age of 10, that I love dearly.

There is no reason to announce to the world that you have schizophrenia.

Why would you want to tell someone that a schizophrenic is safe to be around children? Are you experiencing stigma from your family or friends or others who don’t want you around their children?

Changing a belief such as theirs will be hard at best. I have a friend who lost a friend because the woman’s husband was afraid for my friend to be around their children. She had been friends with this other woman all her life and when she got sick, things changed. So she decided the friend, the husband and their kids were better left on their own.

Regards,

Christina
