Scars From Bug Bites And Scratches Leaving Dark Spots On Skin. What Can I Do?

I have olive skin. Anytime I get a bug bite or scratch, the scar leaves a dark spot on my skin. Is there any way of lightening these spots so they are not so noticeable?

People with more melanin in their skin do have to deal with skin discoloration after scarring. There are a number of over-the-counter products you can try, such as Murad Age Spot & Pigment Lightening Gel. It contains hydroquinone, which has been shown to lighten hyperpigmentation, as well as glycolic acid, which helps exfoliate skin.

Using these kinds of lightening products won't cause miraculous fading, but it does seem to help in terms of fading the intensity of dark spots. Be sure to try these products on an inconspicuous location first, to make sure they aren't going to further harm your skin or cause excess lightening and make the areas even more noticeable.

Sun exposure can make scars even darker. Be sure to generously apply sunscreen any time you are going outside and stay out of the direct sunlight as much as possible during the hours between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Most scars do fade over time, however, if the scars are very bothersome you can also consult with a dermatologist about laser treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and filling scars with collagen.
