Sharp,needle-like Pain On Outer Side Of Big Toe. Pain Lasts A Couple Of Seconds, Then Goes Away For A Few Seconds And Then Returns. Going On All Day. What Is Causing This/

I have a sharp pain that comes and goes on the side of my big toe all day. What is it?

Answer

It could be any number of things. Bursitis - an inflammation of the fluid filled sacs that help cushion the toe joints - can cause very sharp pain. If you find that your big toe is inclined towards the second toe, you could have bunions and that can be very painful. Other possibilities exist but you should recognize that most of our foot and toe problems are due to poor fitting shoes which have poor support. Simply getting shoes that give your toes enough room and which support your feet well can get rid pf a lot of foot pain.

Another possibility is gout; it usually affects the big toes first. It's often accompanied by swelling but not always.

If this condition persists, be sure to see your doctor.
