I Have Had Skin Pain For My Entire Life, Without Exception, And With No Physical Symtpoms. It Hurts To Be Touched By Any Stimulus, My Own Or Others. It Has Always Been This Way. Anyone Have Any Ideas?

I have this weird sort of skin pain. For reasons, im not inclined to refer to it as pain..I always assumed pain had to have a cause, a start or an end. My pain is not that way; it is eternal. From my earliest memories, to 25 years old, I have without cease had skin pain that makes it painful for me to touch myself, and even more painful when others touch me. This gets worse in the more sensitive areas. Sex life is impossible. There is absolutely nothing to indicate a problem. No redness, no swelling, no itching..indeed, ive never had much of a problem with itching at all. But all the same, every touch no matter how light causes me enough pain to induce reflex recoil. And again, this has never not been the case. Its been like this my entire life without cause. Im not particularly unhealthy, blood tests always show im free of special disease or deficencies, and indeed i am usually told to be in astoundingly good health. This does not help explain th epain. I cannot even find a name for this condition: in every case I find, it had a starting point, or a physical manifestation, or would recur. But mine is simply, and without err, constant from the beginning of my life to this very second. There are two places where it triggers a very different reaction...Below my navel, to either side. Rubbing along these areas produces intense nausea until the stimulus is removed. This occurs only wiht light touch, with wider, firmer touches eliciting the normal pain response the rest of my skin goes through. So..yeah, I dont even know a name for this, let alone what it is or how to make it stop so..any help would be extremely welcome.

Answer

There is a name for what you describe -; allodynia. Allodynia is pain resulting from a stimulus (such as a light touch of the skin) which would not normally provoke pain.

Often allodynia is a clinical feature of another chronic pain condition like fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy or complex regional pain syndrome. Tactile allodynia (pain in response to light brushing of the skin) is thought to be caused by central sensitization. Central sensitization is an increase in the excitability of neurons within the central nervous system, so that normal inputs begin to produce abnormal responses.

Here is a link to an article in which Dr. Christina Lasich describes allodynia and gives some treatment options: What Can Be Done for Nerve Pain

You really need to find a doctor who understands and knows how to treat allodynia. Don't hesitate to keep searching until you find a doctor who listens to you and is willing to work with you to find the best treatment to help relieve your pain. Some types of specialists you might try include physiatrists (specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation), neurologists (specialize in nervous system disorders) and pain management specialists.

I personally have fibromyalgia with allodynia so I have some idea of what you are experiencing. Often just having clothes touch my body is painful. For me, tramadol has helped a lot, but everyone is different and you and your doctor will need to work together to find what helps you the most.
