Researchers at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa have developed a diagnostic test that will detect antibodies in the blood related to a number of medical conditions and infections, including Lyme disease and HIV.

Once approved, the mobile enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (MELISA) will allow health care providers to conduct the blood test from a remote location, such as a doctor’s office or clinic, rather than sending the patient to a laboratory. The mobile the test would analyze the results using images taken by cellphone and provide immediate results.

USF researchers are now calibrating MELISA for different tests and plan to apply for FDA approval.
