Sleep Seven Hours for a Young Heart

Set your alarm for a seven-hour sleep session nightly, and you may help prevent excess heart age (EHA), says a new study being presented at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS) in Baltimore. The research abstract is available in the online supplement of Sleep.

Seven appears to be the magic number for sleep during a 24-hour period, while sleeping less or more may increase heart age. Short sleepers are at risk of the highest EHA numbers.

The lead author said the preliminary results have merit because they provide a quantitative way to look at sleep duration in the context of cardiovascular risk and could be useful in clinical care and for public health. Researchers analyzed self-reported sleep duration from 12,775 adults, 30 to 74 years of age, who took part in the 2007 – 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). This study complements other research demonstrating the health benefits of regular sleep.
