People who are addicted to social media have personality traits similar to those of people who engage in the risky use of alcohol, say researchers at Bond University in Queensland, Australia. Results of their study involving 143 young men and women were published in the Australian Journal of Psychology. These traits common to social media addiction and alcohol abuse include:
- Narcissism (vanity)
- Reward sensitivity (behavior motivated by the possibility of a perceived benefit)
- Alexithymia (an inability to identify and describe emotions; a lack of emotional awareness and social attachment)
The researchers noted that additional research examining similarities and differences among risk factors for substance and behavioral addictions could help improve treatments for disordered behaviors and addictions.
