Supplements Don't Slow Cognitive Decline
Supplements like omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that have been thought to be beneficial to brain health actually may not be all that effective in slowing cognitive decline, according to a study at the National Institutes of Health. Their findings have been published in JAMA.
For the study, published in JAMA, researchers recruited more than 3,500 people with an average age of 73 and evaluated their cognitive function at the start of the study. They then randomly assigned participants to take two different types of supplements (lutein/zeaxanthin supplement and eicosapentaenoic acid), both, or a placebo.
After following up with the participants every two years, however, they ultimately found there were no significant differences between the group that took the supplements and the group that took the placebo.
More research needs to be done on to see if maybe the effects of supplements may be more beneficial if people start taking them at an earlier age.
