I Got Swollen Lymph Nodes Under My Lower Jaw. I Finished Treatment For Breast Cancer Stage 1,3 Months Ago, And Worried What It May Be?

I have swollen lymph nodes under my lower jaw. I finished treatment for breast cancer stage 1,3 months ago, and worried what it may be, I went through surgery, chemo, and radiation; while on radiation I felt little discomfort in my neck area on the same side. What can it be?

Answer

Julia, after cancer treatment, your immune system is not at its best, so it is easy to get an infection. Your lymph nodes may be swollen because your body is fighting an infection. If you had radiation near these nodes there may be a connection between the radiation and the swelling. There is also the possibility that they are swollen because your cancer has spread. You need to call the doctor as soon as possible to get this checked out. This is not a call-in-the-middle-of-the-night emergency, but don't procrastinate about making an appointment. Probably, it will turn out not to be cancer, but in this first year out of treatment, it is best to call and find out nothing is wrong than to wait and worry. I hope you get good news.
