Is Ther A Connection Between Lisinopril And High Blood Sugar?

I am a 53 year old woman. I am phsically fit and not overweight. I have no history of high blood sugar or diabetes in my family. I eat a well balanced diet and not a lot of junk food, sweets, or fried foods. I have been on Lisinopril for about a year. This last annual check up showed an elevated blood sugar and after further refining my diet and ramping up my exercise regimen, it is still high. About the only thing I have not changed is my blood pressure medication. Prior to this year I was on Diovan and had normal blood sugar results. Is it possible that the Lisinopril is causing the problem?

Hi Margaret56,

It would be unusual if your lisinopril is linked to your elevated blood sugar. Most studies have shown lisinopril to have a positive impact on insulin levels and even a few cases of hypoglycemia (too low blood sugar) due to the medication. However, there is always the exception to the rule, so discuss with your physician. Maybe you could do a little "trial and error" by changing your medication to see if it resolves your blood sugar issue.

All the best,
