migraine symptomsMigraine is a complex disease with myriad possible symptoms, including osmophobia. Some of these symptoms can be frightening; at the least, they're frustrating.Osmophobia is sometimes defined as an extreme fear of smells and odors. In the context of migraine, however, it means an increased sensitivity to smells and odors.

Along with phonophobia and photophobia, osmophobia is a common migraine symptom. Osmophobia can occur as early as the prodrome phase of a migraine attack and continue into the headache phase.

Osmophobia can be an especially frustrating symptom when it occurs at the same time as nausea because it can worsen the nausea. Unlike nausea, however, there are no symptomatic treatments for osmophobia. It does subside, along with other migraine symptoms, when an abortive medication is used and is effective.
