Any Treatments To Successfully Relief Bursitis Pain In The Hips?

My wife suffers from bursitis pain in her hip and it has progressed to both hips over the past year. Her doctor tells her there's no medical help available to relieve her hip pain. We do not know what type of bursitis she has, infectious or non-infectious, nor do we know how to convince the doctor to test for it. During this time he has prescribed Celebrex, anti-inflammatories, cortisone shots, alternate ice/heat applications and other pain meds but with little relief. Is there any person out there that has received a treatment that has successfully relieved hip-bursitis? Which one worked best? And does anyone know if ice or heat is better for the pain?

Answer

It seems to me that it would be important to know whether or not the bursitis is caused by an infection because septic bursitis should be treated with an antibiotic. If it were me or my loved one, I think I would see an orthopaedic specialist at this point.

There is a good article about hip bursitis by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00409 If you scroll about three-quarters of the way down the page, you'll see the different treatment options, including surgical removal of the bursa, which may be an option worth considering.

I hope you're able to get some help for your wife soon.
