Unexplained Joint And Muscle Pain

I'm a healthy 50-something with nary a health problem all my life, but about one month ago my right elbow became sore, as if I had bruised the bone. The muscle in the forearm was sore as well, as if I had done some heavy lifting the day prior. I didn't pay it much attention.

Now, a month later, none of the symptoms have ceased. And a couple other muscles are now exhibiting the same "soreness," even though I did nothing to aggravate them. The soreness in the right forearm is enough that lifting even a small weight if painful. Can anyone provide a preliminary diagnosis before I see my internist? Thanks.

Answer

I would definitely see a doctor about this. Some conditions such as fibromyalgia and CRPS are associated with a kind of 'spreading pain' that is not associated with further trauma. If your pain sensitization is increasing for some reason then you want to get it under control as quickly as possible.

On the other hand something else may have happened. Generally if pains have not gotten significantly better within two weeks its time to see a doctor.
