My doctor found a small spot on my prostate. He is going to perform a biopsy. Please explain what the biopsy may find, and the treatment if it is cancer.

Answer

Hi Poosey,

Thanks for your question. Once the results of your biopsy come back, your doctor will recommend a course of treatment if there is cancer present. Keep in mind though that many biopsies come back negative, and the fact that you’ve had one isn’t cause to worry.

Prostate cancer is often very slow growing - it is estimated that 90% of all prostate cancers remain dormant and clinically unimportant for decades. Because of this, treatment options can vary widely depending on how fast the tests determine the cancer might be growing.

You might want to take a look at our Prostate Cancer section, and make sure to check out the sections on Prognosis, Screening and Diagnosis, and Treatment.

I hope that helps!
