Can You Use Nicotine Patches If You Have Hyperthyroidism?

I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' Disease six months ago and recently I have been strongly recommended by my doctors to give up smoking. Is it possible to use nicotine patches whilst having Hyperthyroidism? The leaflets always say do not use if you have uncontrolled Hyperthryoidism but what is the difference between controlled and uncontrolled? While I am on Carbimazole I have not had any other therapy. Am I able to use patches?

Thanks for your question.

Though you are on Carbimazole for treatment of your over active thyroid, you need to ask your physician if your thyroid functions studies are back in the normal, or controlled ranges. It they are still in the high ranges, or over active, then you should wait before beginning nicotine patches. The additive effect of the the nicotine and your thyroid condition could cause symptoms affecting your heart.

If done perfectly, substituting one form of nicotine for another seems easy enough, but you can never predict how the patches will be absorbed and metabolized. It would be best and safest to wait until the thyroid is under control.

Congratulations on making this important decision to stop smoking.
