I Wake Up With A Headache In The Morning. I Have A Compressed Disk In My Neck. Is This Related?

I wake up with a headache every morning. Often they'll go away in 15 minutes or so, but sometimes it turns into a real migraine. Sometimes I also have pain in my neck which is caused by sleeping on my stomach, and I have a compressed disc in my neck. Do you think that could be causing the headaches? I have fibromyalgia too, so I spend a lot of my time thinking about and managing my pain. I'd really like to know if there are steps I can take, or if there's a certain type of doctor who might help me manage this morning pain. It would really help my anxiety levels, anyway! Thanks for any help.

Answer

Hi Christina,

Often times when we wake with a headache it could mean we have problems getting a full night of sleep -restorative sleep is very important - a regular sleep schedule. This means going to bed at the same time and waking at the same time each day may help restore your sleep. Having a sleep study may be helpful too. Video: Migraines and Sleep.

Neck pain is often a common symptom of a Migraine attack that most people aren't aware of. Continue reading this article for more information:

Now, the disc issues won't cause a Migraine, but they could trigger one, I know for me they have. Have you done any PT or massage? Anyone who has three or more Migraines a month needs to be talking with their doctor about prevention. There's growing evidence that Migraine is a progressive brain disease. A recent study showed that Migraines can cause brain damage, and that people with three or more Migraines a month are more susceptible to this damage.
