Want to Cut Your Dementia Risk? Try These Strategies
Lifestyle choices that boost brain health could prevent about one-third of dementia cases, according to a report published in The Lancet. The study focused on nine dementia risk factors and underscored the importance of taking lifelong steps to prevent dementia.
Researchers analyzed several previous studies on dementia risk and then estimated the potential impact of reducing the risk factors. They focused on: continuing education past the age of 15; treating hearing loss, high blood pressure, and obesity in middle age; quitting smoking; and avoiding depression, physical inactivity, social isolation, and diabetes in people over the age of 65.
According to researchers, effectively targeting these risk factors could reduce dementia risk by about 35 percent worldwide.
