Watching TV Together Can Help Your Relationship

Many couples have friends in common—and doing things together with friends can help strengthen a couple’s bond. But if you and your partner don’t travel in the same social circle, don’t worry. According to a recent study, enjoying the same television shows, movies, and books can also improve your relationship.

A team of psychologists from the U.S., the U.K., and Canada surveyed 250 couples about their relationships and habits. They found that sharing media results in stronger relationships—greater intimacy and more confidence in the partnership—independent of the result of spending increased amounts of time together. Interestingly, the improvement may be even greater in couples who have fewer mutual friends.

According to researchers, having a close circle of friends can make a couple feel closer—even if those friends are fictional television characters.  As it turns out, binge watching your favorite shows—which typically isn’t good for health—may in fact be good for your relationship.
