What Causes Early Morning Stiffness And Pain In The Hands?

My fingers are VERY stiff in the mornings, and my knuckles will lock when I make a fist. When I try to open my hand, I have to pull my fingers out with my other hand. What could be causing this?

Hi, Gina!

Sounds as though you have some serious morning stiffness in your hands.   How long has this been going on, and are your fingers/hands painful?   Are they swollen and/or warm to the touch?   How long does the stiffness last?  I looked at your profile and you haven't shared any health information, so I don't know if you have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis or not.  That makes it difficult to details about this. Please provide a little more information, and we will certainly try to help you as much as we can.

RA and osteoarthritis can cause the type of symptom you are describing. We have some great articles about osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis that may be helpful to you.

As well, you may want to look at our article about trigger finger, a condition that can cause the locking you describe.

I'd recommend you make an appointment to see your family doctor to discuss this issue with them and perhaps have some tests to see what's going on.

Good luck!
