What Causes Lower Left Abdominal Pain?

I've been having a lot of discomfort in my left lower abdomen for the last month. It's a dull pain during the day, but it night it gets worse and I can't sleep. Occasionally my abdomen also itches and feels swollen, and there is a sharp pain near my navel. I've seen a doctor who found nothing wrong and said it might be stress. Do you have any idea what this could be?

The causes of abdominal pain can be difficult to pinpoint. If your primary care doctor hasn't been able to determine a cause it may be time to see a specialist. A gastroenterologist, for example, may be able to help with a diagnosis, since generalized abdominal pain can signal anything from acid reflux, IBS, and peptic ulcer disease, to ovarian cysts.

And your doctor was right that stress and anxiety are common causes of abdominal pain. If you haven't taken stress reduction seriously it's important to do that. Meditation, yoga, and other stress-reduction techniques can help with pain, and may help you sleep better. That's important as well, since we know that sleep disruption can cause a host of health problems.
