What Causes Pain In Ankle Going Straight Up Outside Of Lower Leg

usually happens during sleep

A problem called peroneal tendonitis could be causing this. This occurs when the tendon stretching down the lower leg that stabilizes the foot becomes inflamed. This often happens to runners and it can cause pain in the ankle as well. The remedy for this is generally rest, ice and stretching.

A stress fracture, again often occurring during running or other sports activities, can cause pain in the ankle and the leg. About 10% of stress fractures affect the outside of the leg.

Arthritis is another possibility but given the outside leg involvement you might want to focus on tendonitis. You'll have to see a doctor to get this resolved. Good luck!
