What Causes Sharp Pain In The Foot By The First Metatarsal Bone?

I have intermittent pain along the first metatarsal bone in my left foot? It can present it self as a shooting pain or burning sensation. It comes and goes and I never know it there is something I amdoing to set it off. Sometimes it comes in the middle of the night, sometimes when I am sitting (like right now), sometimes when I am walking. Do you have any idea what is causing this as it really bothers at times?

Answer

I think you're going to have to see a podiatrist for this. Burning and shooting pains are often caused by nerve problems and it could be that you have an intermittently impinged nerve. Most foot problems are caused by ill fitting shoes and you probably want to ensure that you have shoes that are wide enough to accomodate your feet and have a good cushion, etc. You need a podiatrist, though, to determine what's going on and what the solution is.

Good luck!
