What Is The Difference Between A Breast Cyst And Fibroadenoma?

I went to the doctor yesterday because I have a knot on my right breast. He said it felt like a fibroadenoma. He planned for me to have an ultrasound next week. He also said that he don't think that it is cancer, but it could be. He also said it might be a cyst.

Answer

Breast cysts and fibroadenomas are two kinds of non-cancerous breast lumps. Cysts are filled with fluid and fibroadenomas are solid. Ultrasounds are very good at recognizing cysts, so you may know by the time you leave the radiologist's office if you have a cyst. Because fibroadenomas are solid, it may require a biopsy to make sure your lump is a fibroadenoma and not cancer. Sometimes the doctor can guess what a lump is by texture and shape, but it's not a sure thing without an imaging test and/or biopsy. I hope you get good news from your ultrasound.

Best of luck, and let us know how you are doing.
