What Is The Difference Between Razor Burn And Herpes On The Vagina?

There are some bumps around my vagina, but none on the inside. I'm not sure if this is just razor burn or if it could be herpes. Can anyone help explain the difference? Thanks.

Answer

Hi there, batty -

Though seeing a doctor is the only way to be sure what you're dealing with, here are some general differences between razor burn and genital herpes:

  • Herpes sores are uncommon on areas where there is hair in the genital area.

  • Herpes tends to occur and reoccur in the same spot on the body or very near by that spot.

  • Razor burn tends to produce lesions that have a hair in the center of it, while herpes sores go from a red bump to a blister, then to an open sore of scab that heals over a few days (typical duration for a herpes sore outbreak and healing is 10-12 days)
