What Are The Differences And Similarities Between Mental Retardation And Mental Illness.

Answer

I just want to add that yes, mental retardation (which is now usually referred to as developmental disability) can be accompanied by mental illness. I have an adult son with a developmental disability who also suffers from depression and autism and a couple of other emotional disorders. I think it's harder to diagnose a mental illness or dysfunction in a person with a developmental disability because the disability - such as autism - can mimic the symptoms of depression.
