What Does It Mean If It States Likely Superimposed Fibroglandular Tissue Suggesting Further Workup?

I have a tender spot on the lower area of my right breast. My OB is sending me to a breast specialist r/t my mamo that states likely superimposed fibroglandular breast tissue suggesting further workup. Does that sound like anything to worry about?

Answer

Tabi, fibroglandular tissue is normal breast tissue. What it means that it's superimposed, not sure, but it could be what often happens with a mammogram - some tissue gets folded over on itself and looks denser than it is (tumor-like), when in reality it's just positioned wrong for the mammogram. Bottom line - sounds like your doctor is being super-cautious, which is a good thing! And chances are this is nothing to worry about. Good luck - PJH
