What Does " Pvc"s" Mean On An Ekg

yesterday I had an EKG and the Dr. said I was having " pvc's", what does that mean? Now I get a halter monitor for 24 hours to see if there is a "pattern" to my pvc's, what does all this mean? May 1st, I had a breast reduction that went well except after surgery I got a pulmonary embolus, I am presently on Coumadin to disolve the blood clots. Thanks. Judy

PVCs stand for premature ventricular contractions. These are irregular beats of the heart, when part of the electrical system of the cardiac muscle beat out of sequence. They may be the sign of a heart condition but can also be caused by anxiety, caffeine, infection, abnormal blood levels of body minerals, and dehydration, just to name a few. Most often they are totally benign, but a Holter monitor will help to determine if they are a sign of something more ominous.
