What foods do I need to avoid to keep my hemoglobin levels normal? Thanks for your response.

Answer

Try to eat foods rich in iron such as:

• Liver, beef, turkey

• Seafood

• Blackstrap molasses

• Pumpkin seeds

• Beans and lentils

• Green leafy vegetables

• Enriched cereals

• Baked potato with skin

• Enriched pastas and breads

Foods than enhance your absorption of iron and are good to eat with iron-rich foods include:

• Orange and grapefruit juices (Note: Grapefruit juice can interfere with some medications, so be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.)

• Cantaloupe, strawberries

• Broccoli, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, green and red peppers

• Tomato juice

• White wine

Foods that inhibit your absorption of iron and should NOT be eaten with meals or iron-rich foods include:

• Milk products

• Coffee, tea

• Red wine

• Sweet potatoes

• Chard, beet greens, rhubarb

• Bran and other whole grains

• Soy products

Spinach is a tricky food. While it does have iron, it also has oxalic acid, which inhibits the absorption of iron. If you really like spinach, just try to eat it with one of the foods that enhances iron absorption.
