What Happens If You Survive A Suicide Attempt? Do You Lose Rights? Become An Involintary Psych Patie

what happens if you survive a suicide attempt? do you lose rights? become an involintary psych patient, get a custodian, or are you free on your own recognasense?

Answer

Hi, Jason. Every case is different, but I have met no end of people who have survived a suicide attempt. Typically, they are hospitalized until the danger period is over. This is usually only after a few days. Day programs and outpatient treatment generally follow, but this is voluntary. It's in your best interest to stick with treatment and counseling, but no one is going to compel you. Generally, you are free to get on with your life, which is usually the best form of therapy.

There are rare cases involving conservatorship, where a guardian is appointed re finances and other matters, but these typically involve people who cannot be trusted to handle their affairs, which probably does not include you. So I wouldn't worry about this.

You have survived something terrible. But here you are, still here. Please be assured - you have a life worth looking forward to. Be kind on yourself and have faith.
