What Happens 5 Years After Green Light Laser Prostate Surgery And How Many Men Have To Have The Procedure Repeated?

I had the green light procedure done in 12/2007 and my urologist thought I should go on Avodart (it wasn’t a strong recommendation). I don’t like the Avodart for a number of reasons and I’m wondering if I’m headed for another green light surgery. I’m 72 and in otherwise good health.

Answer

The decision to have a repeat laser is based on how symptomatic a patient becomes after treatment. Most patients who undergo this procedure do not need subsequent procedures. It has been estimated that the retreatment rate at 10 years is about 10% of patients.
