What Is Hospital Protocol If Someone Comes In Saying They Thought About Suicide?

If someone said they felt suicidal and they went to the emergency room for it, would the hospital keep them for observation overnight? Reason I ask is that a friend emailed a suicide threat, then texted 45 minutes later that he was in hospital and was "home" a few hours later. Doesn't seem right to me that a hospital would allow that to happen, but I don't know hospital protocol for suicide. Also don't know if my friend was telling the whole truth as he is often caught in lies.

Answer

Hi Wondermom,

I've never experienced this situation, but did find a post from an expert here which describes a friend's similar story. Apparently the process is not that easy. Read here - Suicidal Ideation and Urgent Care Hope that helps a bit.
