What Is Hypolipidemia?

What Is Hypolipidemia?

In a statement concerning my health and my ability to provide care to my 33 year old daughter unassisted, my doctor wrote a listing of my health conditions. That list included hypolipidemia. I cannot find any information on this condition. Is there such a condition (or is the word simply misspelled?) and if so, where can I find information on it?

Answer

Hi Esther McGee,

Hypo means "low" and lipidemia means blood lipid levels such as cholesterol. Hyperlipidemia means elevated cholesterol, low HDLs, high LDLs, etc. Hypolipidemia would mean the opposite, that your cholesterol is low. Hypolipidemia can be a sign of malnutrition or too high of a dose of cholesterol medication (which I don't think is very common). There may be other causes, but I am not aware of what they are. If neither one of these issues apply to you, I encourage you to speak with your physician to determine why he listed this as one of your health conditions.

Best of luck,
