What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Hcqs For Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Answer

Hi Tripta,

I assume that by hcqs, you mean hydroxychloroquine sulphate, also known as Plaquenil. If this is not the case, please let me know. Plaquenil is a malaria drug that also works for RA. It is a fairly mild medication in the DMARDs type of meds (disease modifying antirheumatic drugs), usually used for milder cases of RA or in combination with other DMARDs.

As all medications, Plaquenil does have the potential for side effects. Some of the more common side effects may include stomach difficulties and fatigue. As well, Plaquenil does have the potential for some eye complications. That's why it's important to have your eyes checked before you start the medication and usually every six months when you take Plaquenil. There can be other side effects as well, but I recommend that you talk to your rheumatologist and pharmacist about the benefits and risks of taking any medication for you RA. It's important to keep in mind that just because the particular medication has the potential for certain side effects doesn't mean that you will experience the side effects. If you do, there are a number of things you can do to manage mild to moderate side effects.
