What Can I Use On My Drain Hole Site To Heal Them Faster?

Surgery was 9-3-08. Drains removed 9-24-08. One is still moist and seeping just a wee bit. Looks a little red, maybe a little infected but just some clear fluid, I'm not quite sure. I've been putting peroxide on it at least 3 times a day. I have a follow up with the doctor in 2 days. Any suggestions in the meantime?

Answer

I would stop using the peroxide - even though it does not hurt, your wound should only be lightly cleaned with antibaterial soap while in the shower, then a small amount of Bacitracin ointment put on it. Leave it open if you can, as PJ suggested - but if it itches a lot (which sometimes will happen as a wound heals) then cover it loosely with a piece of gauze and surgical tape - that's what I did. The gauze still allows it to breathe a bit, yet you can't really get at it to scratch. If you do itch & scratch, be aware that scratching can lead to infection. Putting something cold on it will help if the itching gets to you - mine itches a lot and the last thing you want to do is scratch off the newly formed scab!

Good luck!
