Thank you for your question! There isn’t necessarily a direct answer to your question, as what works best for you may not work best for someone else. That being said, Flomax and Cardura (as well as Hytrin, Uroxatral, and Minipres) are similar medications, belonging to the class of drugs known as alpha blockers. Alpha blockers are usually the first-line treatment for BPH. The work quickly - the patient usually sees results in a matter of weeks. Flomax has been shown to be more selective than other alpha blockers - that is, Flomax works where we want it to and has fewer side effects than other alpha blockers. Proscar (as well as Avodart) belongs to the class of medications known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. The 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors take a little longer to start working, and are generally reserved for treatment of excessively large prostates.
Determining the “most effective” medication for an individual can be a complex process, as several factors need to be weighted against each other. It’s important to discuss the benefits and risks associated with each medication with your doctor.
Best of luck,
