What's Stronger Naproxen Or Ibuprofen?

I have had aches on the upper parts of my body (neck, shoulders, etc)! I have rheumatoid arthritis. I been using the ibuprofen (200 & 400mg). I have Aleve and I was wondering if I should switch since the other hasn't done anything but make me sleep. Will Aleve be better in terms of pain relief?

Answer

Both naproxen and ibuprofen are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They work by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. People respond differently to different medications, so it's hard to say which might work best for you. Some people say naproxen works best for them; others say ibuprofen is best; still others seem to get the best results by alternating the two. You'll just have to try the Aleve to see if it's more effective than the ibuprofen for you.

I would like to offer two precautions:

• Note the different dosage instructions. Ibuprofen is generally taken every 6-8 hrs., while naproxen is every 12 hrs.

• If you're taking any other medications or supplements, check with your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes.
