Why Would Bp Be Higher In The Morning Than Late Afternoon?

Answer

Hello Miriam,

Blood pressure is affected by many, many different factor. The fact that you notice changes throughout the day is not uncommon!

There are several medical reasons why your morning blood pressure might be high than the rest of the day. First and most importantly, if you take blood pressure medication with a morning dose, your blood pressure might be high because your last dose starts to "wear off". Or, if it high after you take your medication, note that it takes time (at least 20-30 minutes) for your medication to work.

Also, the amount of a hormone in your body called cortisol is highest in the morning, due to your body's normal cycles. Higher levels of cortisol tend to causes higher blood pressures.

If your blood pressure remains high in the morning, you should speak to your doctor at your next visit about either increasing/starting a medication or adding a drug taken both in the morning and at night.

To your health,
