The first potential cause of this type of pain which is mid-back and to one side is a kidney infection or kidney stones. These very painful conditions can require immediate medical care especially if a fever or blood in the urine are also present. Time to see a doctor to be sure that the kidneys are OK.
Some lab tests like a renal panel and an urinalysis will be helpful screening methods. A physical exam is also important to help pinpoint the exact cause of pain.
Drink plenty of water and see a doctor.
