Why Does The Area Above My Lips Look Brown Like A Mustache After A Day Out In The Sun?

I was biking out in the sun for a few days and forgot to put on sunscreen. Later, I noticed a dark area above my lips that look like a moustache. Is this a temporary tan that will fade soon or will I need to see a dermatologist? What is this condition called?

Answer

Hello Tikki

Let me preface my answer by saying that I am not a doctor or a dermatologist.

You aren't pregnant are you? Sometimes women who are pregnant develop this "mask of pregnancy." But you do not have to be pregnant to have this skin condition. It is called Melasma and it is simply a darkening of the skin and can occur above the lips. Here is a Dermatology site which shows images of melasma and describes it as a transient condition, meaning it will usually go away in time.

Some people use chemical peels or skin lightening agents to get rid of it more quickly. If you are concerned please contact your doctor or dermatologist to ask about possible treatments.

Hope this helps some.

Thank you for your question.
